Biography
Anne Bowler is an Associate Professor of Sociology with joint appointments in the Department of Women and Gender Studies, the Center for Material Culture, and the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. Her research focuses on cultural sociology, with an emphasis on aesthetic-cultural theory and the sociology of art. She has also done historical work on gender. Her current research includes projects on Outsider art, contemporary forms of censorship in the arts, theoretical and methodological issues in the sociology of art, and the social construction of female sexual deviance at the turn of the twentieth century. Her recent articles have appeared in The Journal of Social History; Studies in Law, Politics, and Society; andPoetics.
